CREATING BALANCE IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOUNTAIN
Each year, thousands of people from throughout the Northwest visit the Swift area to enjoy its four seasons of recreation, beauty, and natural splendor - including the internationally reknown Mount St. Helens National Monument. Pope Resources purchased 24,000 acres around the reservoir and in 2007 entered into a partnership with the Columbia Land Trust to place up to 85% of the most environmentally sensitive lands into conservation. The easements allow continued forestry (except in riparian zones) but eliminate any potential real estate development.
By the close of 2014 we expect over 12,300 acres will be protected under some form of conservation. Meanwhile, we are renewing our agreements with Columbia Land Trust to allow them up to 10 years to purchase over 8,500 acres of additional conservation easement.
Current plans for the remainder of the property include 20-acre cabin sites. Previously we had discussed the potential for lodging and commercial services. The Great Recession had a serious dampening effect on that concept; however, we remain open to its further discussion.
